Traditionally, engagement sessions are scheduled after you and your partner are engaged. This is a portrait session to showcase the next stage in your relationship before you get married. There are several reasons why having an engagement session can be beneficial. In this blog I will talk about why you shouldn’t skip your engagement photos!
An engagement session can provide you with photos for your save the dates, wedding website and photo displays at your wedding.
Additionally, if you haven’t told anyone you’re engaged, you can use your photos as an opportunity to announce your engagement!
**Expert Tip: use your engagement session to have a trial run with your hair and makeup artist. Your engagement session is a great test to see if it holds up!
An engagement session is a good opportunity to meet your photographer and break the ice. It’s a good idea to get to know them and understand their photography style. It’s important that you are comfortable with your photographer, so that on the day of your wedding you are like old friends.
Wedding days are already stressful so having an engagement session beforehand eliminates meeting a stranger on the day of. I personally love building relationships with my clients beforehand so that I have a better understanding of how I can shoot their gallery to best represent them as a couple.
Engagement sessions can be a great way to spend a date night together. It is a super special experience and not the usual dinner and movies. It can be really fun to think of some unique props to include during your session that speak to your relationship.
Another way you can make it feel more like a date night is choosing to do an activity together. For example, if you enjoy spending the weekends at the lake with your dog, choose to have your session at the lake playing ball with your furry friend. This can make for some super great action shots, candid moments and belly-laughs!
Choosing a new location to travel to for your engagement session can be a really great way to make your session feel like a date night! You can spend the evening taking photos with your lover while experiencing and exploring a new place together. What a great way to kick-off the next chapter in your lives by traveling somewhere you’ve never been!
Many people are naturally nervous in front of the camera and I mostly believe this is due to not knowing what to expect. A lot of us have never had professional photos taken of us and it can feel unnatural.
That is why engagement sessions are so important, because it allows you the chance to understand how your photographer is going to have you move and interact.
It will familiarize you with the poses that you might do on your wedding day. Having a good understanding of the posing prompts your photographer uses ahead of time takes away the stress of feeling like you don’t know how to move your body.
Engagement sessions allow for your photographer to also understand what poses are most flattering and comfortable for you both. Additionally, if you already have an idea of how your wedding portraits will go, it will take less time allowing for more fun photos throughout the day and get you to cocktail hour faster!
One of the most common questions I get asked is, “How will we get our photos?”
If we have an engagement session together you can see exactly how I deliver your gallery. Once you receive your digital gallery you can check-out how the system works and ask me any questions you have.
Then when your wedding gallery gets delivered you know how to share it with all your friends and family.
I could share so many reasons why engagement sessions are beneficial but these are just a few of my favorites. I hope this blog post made you say “YES!” to an engagement session, I wouldn’t want you to miss out. Being engaged is a fun time in your relationship and it deserves to be documented!
